The revised EU Tobacco Products Directive came into effect in May 2016, providing stricter regulations for e-cigarettes. It limits e-cigarette advertising in print, on television and radio, along with reducing the level of nicotine in liquids and reducing the flavors used. We observed that Tnfa gene expression was significantly increased in the NAc-core and NAc-shell of mice exposed to one or 3 months of JUUL Mango or JUUL Mint compared to Air controls (Figure 1A–D). In contrast, Tnfa levels were unchanged in the hippocampus throughout the exposures (Figure 1E–F). Il1b gene expression was also significantly elevated in JUUL Mint- and Mango-exposed mice in both the NAc-core and NAc-shell at 1 month compared to air controls but remained elevated at 3 months only in the NAc-shell . The hippocampus showed unchanged levels of Il1b gene expression at 1 and 3 months across groups .

The manuscript has significantly improved and the authors added additional data to support their conclusion and further adapted the manuscript text and highlighted the limitations of this study. There are also pod mod devices that use protonated nicotine, rather than free-base nicotine found in earlier generations, providing higher nicotine yields through the production of aerosolized protonated nicotine. Research linking e-cigarettes to cancer is lacking and scientists are still studying the risk, but some animal, lab and human studies have linked vaping to several types of cancer. Scientists exposed cells from various parts of the body to e-cig vapor and found the chemicals caused DNA damage, inflammation and cell death. Although the term “vapor” may sound harmless, the aerosol that comes out of an e-cigarette is not water vapor and can be harmful. The aerosol from an e-cigarette can contain nicotine and other substances that are addictive and can cause lung disease, heart disease, and cancer. Pod mods were designed to provide higher nicotine delivery with a smaller amount of power than conventional e-cigarettes.

Because of the potential relationship with tobacco laws and medical drug policies, e-cigarette legislation is being debated in many countries. The companies that make e-cigarettes have been pushing for laws that support their interests. In 2016 the US Department of Transportation banned the use of e-cigarettes on commercial flights.
